Lord, Teach Us to Pray!

Luke 11:1-28    Genesis 19    Psalm 12

In Luke 11, Jesus prays. When he finishes, one of his disciples said: “Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples.” Jesus responds with the gift of a model prayer and a series of lessons on prayer.  The first lesson to pay sharp attention to is that prayer is a learned behavior.

Teach us to Pray! What are the prayer lessons in todays text(s)? Here are a few questions to lead our reflection: What do you notice about the structure of the “Lord’s Prayer?” How does that order teach us to pray? And what of persistence? And asking? That, by the way, leads back to Abraham. Remember his bold prayer in Gen.18? Does God answer his prayer? Genesis 19:29 indicates the answer is “yes.”  What might have happened had Abraham not prayed?

Lord, teach us to pray. Persistently and faithfully. Asking that your kingdom come. Seeking your Spirit. Knocking on the door of heaven. Amen.
