Live Secure.

Revelation 7    Nehemiah 10    Psalm 102

“The children of your servants shall live secure” (Psalm 102:28). As we read God’s word today, we hear a prayer for healing in sickness (Psalm 102) and find people making promises to “adhere to the law of God” and obligating themselves to give offerings and tithes in support of the ministry (Nehemiah 10). We also receive two visions which offer reassurance to the faithful (Revelation 7). I offer that the theme enveloping all of these texts is summarized by the psalmist: No matter the circumstances, those who trust God “shall live secure.”

“And I heard the number of those who were sealed” (Revelation 7:4). One hundred forty-four thousand. Twelve thousand, multiplied by twelve. The number signifies completeness. Every one of the redeemed is present and accounted for. Add to this the “great multitude that no one could count from every nation” (v.9), and the assurance grows: not a one of the faithful is missing. Why? They all answer with a shout: “Salvation belongs to our God!” (v.10), echoing the confidence of the psalmist, who trusts that God “will rise up and have compassion” on Zion (v.13), and will “regard the prayer” of the destitute and the prisoners and “those who were doomed to die” (v.17,20) . . .

“And the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them” (Revelation 7:15). No more hunger, nor thirst, nor tears . . . those who place their trust in God will dwell secure under the shelter and protection of God and the Lamb. Forever. And this is God’s doing through Christ, “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). Do you see it? Hear it? Believe it? Those who “have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb” (v.14) can live in complete confidence, security, and faithfulness, knowing that salvation belongs to God and they will  be forever in the care and keeping of God. Even if the days of our physical lives are shortened (Psalm 102:23). And for this reason the redeemed shout and the angels sing the sevenfold praise: “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen” (Revelation 7:12).

“And the one who is seated on the throne
will shelter them.

They will hunger no more,
and thirst no more;
the sun will not strike them,
nor any scorching heat;
for the Lamb at the center of the throne
will be their shepherd.”
— Revelation 7:15,16
