There Is No Other.

Ephesians 6    Ezekiel 17    Isaiah 46

“For I am God, and there is no other” (Isaiah 46:9) . . . No other god capable of creating, carrying, or delivering (Isaiah 46) . . . no other saving king or power or alliance (Ezekiel 17) . . . and no other master (Ephesians 6:9). “There is no other.” It is this message, above all else, that is communicated by today’s readings together. Hear it in the prophets: Greater than all other story lines being written, God’s “purpose shall stand” and be accomplished (Isaiah 46:10; Ezekiel 17:24). See it in the instruction of the apostle: God is Master of all — no exceptions (Ephesians 6:9). And consider the implications . . .

“I have made, and I will bear; I will carry and will save” (Isaiah 46:4). There is no other who can make or carry through on such a promise. No one, no thing. No other. Only the One Master of us all, “who is above all and through all and in all” (remember Ephesians 4:4-6) will carry and save us all the way through, strengthening and protecting us against every evil power that would seek to undo us (Ephesians 6:10ff). Be encouraged by this, beloved! Be encouraged and “be strong in the Lord and the strength of his power” (v.10). Be very clear, also, in your calling…

“Obey Christ” (Ephesians 6:5). In all our human interactions and in every effort to “render service” (v.7), our focus and standard is “doing the will of God from the heart” (v.6) in obedience to the one Lord and Master of us all. Ours is a level playing, working, serving field. Be it honoring parents, raising children, serving others, or exercising authority, all is to be done “as to the Lord” and no other. What might this mean for each of us as we go about this day? How might we be encouraged? And how might we be challenged to change? May you be strong in the Lord who carries you. May you serve the Lord enthusiasm. And may you remember that the Lord is God and there is no other. Amen.

“I have carried you since you were born;
I have taken care of you from your birth.
Even when you are old, I will be the same.
Even when your hair has turned gray,
I will take care of you.
I made you and will take care of you.
I will carry you and save you.”
— Isaiah 46:3,4 (NCV)
