Of Pride and Hope . . .

Colossians 1:24-2:19   Ezekiel 27-28   Isaiah 54

“Your heart was proud . . . you corrupted your wisdom . . .” (Ezekiel 28:17). So speaks the prophet to the king of Tyre, while Paul cautions the Colossian believers against being “puffed up without cause by a human way of thinking” that has “an appearance of wisdom” (Colossians 2:18,23). And alongside these texts, we hear Isaiah sing a song to a people who think God has deserted them, assuring them of God’s steadfast love (Isaiah 54) . . . The combined concern of today’s readings? The danger of being carried away by our pride; carried away from God our Maker and Redeemer (Isaiah 54:5) and into thinking we are wise enough and strong enough to live life on our own. Hear the word of the Lord:

“Christ in you, the hope of glory” (Colossians 1:27). There is nothing of pride and self-sufficiency in this. It is only by the power of God in us that we have any hope of life as God intends. There is only one “God of the whole earth” (Isaiah 54:5), an it isn’t you or me. Those who know this (Ezekiel 28:22,23,24,26) live. Those who don’t, deceive themselves and have no hope of being made alive together with Christ (Ezekiel 28:6; Colossians 2:13). Hope is found in relying on God’s grace made effective in Jesus Christ, “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). He is the head — the source — life and hope are found only in him. But in him they are, indeed found!

“Therefore . . . continue to live your lives in him” (Colossians 2:6). Stay focused. Stay rooted. Stay connected. Keep trusting Christ Jesus the Lord. And you — we, together — will grow “with a growth that is from God” (Colossians 2:19). Beloved, God’s love for you is “everlasting” (Isaiah 54:8). And more than sufficient for your every need. In fact, in Christ, God has already “made you alive together with him” (Colossians 2:13). Live into that aliveness. Pride and self-sufficiency are highly overrated. Christ in you, the hope of glory, by the grace and love of God your Maker and Redeemer. Amen.

“For the mountains may depart
and the hills be removed,
but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,
and my covenant of peace shall not be removed,
says the LORD, who has compassion on you.”
— Isaiah 54:10
